Getting on first base
(according to Wikipedia): 1. to begin to have success with something that you want to do, especially in the early stages of something.

Getting on First Base (according to The BizzBoosters): 1. to begin to experience business success with something that you want to do (build a list, make sales), especially in the early stages of something (as in building a relationship with your leads, prospects, subscribers, customers and clients).

In January of 2005, while we were brainstorming about the purpose of our newly-formed business—The BizzBoosters Inc.—Laurel came up with the tag line that appeared on our first set of business cards: "Teaching businesspeople how to get on First Base by design." We thought that appropriately described what we did—and still do—and we liked the analogy.

Then, in mid-March of that same year, someone introduced us to Robert Middleton’s Web site where we found a LOT of really informative marketing material. [Make sure you check out that site at some point soon—very soon]. Amongst other things, we found a brilliant, detailed explanation of how the marketing game works. It’s entitled Marketing Ball. Here are some of the highlights of the first part, as it relates to getting on First Base.

"The object of the Game is to start from Home Base
where you don't have a client,
go all around the bases then back to home again
where you have secured a new client.
…To get from Home Plate to First Base
you need to get the attention of your prospect client.
You do this through effectively communicating
an attention-getting message
This generates interest so they want to know more.
It all comes down to what you say when people ask you
"What do you do?",
or what headline is on the letter or brochure you send
Words matter here."

Amen to that Mr. Middleton. Words indeed matter here.
